Aliens in Antarctica – Part One
THE PRESENT
There have been lots of aliens released in Antarctica. All the proven ones are of this Earth, and they often signal a change in climate.
Wherever humans go, so do our pests. Signatories to the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol, which include protections for the Antarctic environment, endeavor to limit invasive effects on the pristine wilderness, and tourist bodies like IAATO and national Antarctic programs are also there to prevent biological invasions. But nothing is 100% foolproof.
Introductions have spanned teams of sled dogs in exploratory expeditions, to more modest infestations of research station sewerage systems by cosmopolitan gnats. Even the modest house fly and midges have given it a go.
As the climate continues to warm, however, and human activity likely increases, more alien species will find new, suitable ice-free habitat in Antarctica, unless biosecurity is enhanced.
THE FAR PAST
Antarctica was not always cold and bleak. Hidden beneath the snow on James Ross Island, scientists have discovered a plethora of fossils. They are the remains of ancient sea creatures, including those of a mosasaurus – a gigantic whale-like creature. Just the tip of the iceberg, you might say.
RESEARCH
New studies have shown the potential dangers from non-native species and their establishment in the unique waters around the continent. These unwelcome visitors could arrive by hitching a lift on supply, tourism, research and fishing vessels.
Marine species including barnacles, algae, mussels and crabs can attach themselves to vessels via biofouling) or stowaway in ballast water. They can therefore move around the world. If they find themselves in a suitable new environment, these invaders can destabilize whole ecosystems with devastating results.
SUMMARY
While measures help to mitigate the risk of introducing non-native species, the heightened vulnerability of Antarctica to invasions is becoming more apparent. After all, humans find it extremely difficult to eradicate invasive species in the enclosed system of their own home!
A NOD TO PART TWO
There is a lot of work being undertaken to preserve the eco-system of Antarctica—and rightly so.
But what about the existence of extra-terrestrial aliens. How much work is going on in that field?
