Hollow Moon and Spaceship Moon

Introduction

As much of the action of upcoming novel Alien Whispers: Conflict and Communion, https://mybook.to/AWCC, takes place on the moon, I thought this month that we could look at some rather extreme theories on what the moon actually is.

H.G. Wells’ 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon appears to be the first publication to mention a hollow Moon.

In 1970, two Soviet authors published a short piece in the “popular press” stating that the Moon could be created by an alien intelligence. Since the late 1970s, the hypothesis has been echoed by conspiracy theorists, some even suggesting that Earth’s natural satellite is an alien spaceship.

The fact that the Moon is significantly less dense than the Earth is advanced as support for its being hollow.

Bell Ringing

Seismometers installed on the Moon by the Apollo missions recorded moonquakes. The Moon was described as “ringing like a bell” during some of those quakes, specifically the shallow ones.

On November 20, 1969, Apollo 12 deliberately crashed the Ascent Stage of its Lunar Module onto the Moon’s surface. NASA recorded that the Moon rang ‘like a bell’ for almost an hour, leading to suppositions that it must be hollow. However, lunar seismology experiments since then have shown that the moon has shallow moonquakes that act differently from quakes on Earth, due to differences in the planetary strata, but there is no evidence of any large empty space inside the body.

Spaceship Moon

The spaceship moon theory is not a new theory. According to Zulu legend, our hollow moon was put in place by two brothers with scaly, fish-like skin. The legend tells of Wowane and Mpanku, who brought the moon to Earth after stealing it from a great fire dragon. They are said to have emptied out the egg-like satellite of its ‘yolk,’ subsequently placing it in orbit around the Earth. Prior to this, the planet was said to have been shrouded in a sheath of watery mist, which came raining down to Earth once the moon came into orbit.

In 1970, Michael Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov of the early Soviet Academy of Sciences advanced a theory that the Moon is a constructed body – a spaceship, created by unknown intelligent beings. The article was published in the Soviet “Sputnik” Magazine under the title: “Is the Moon the Creation of Alien Intelligence”.

The two scientists’ theory relies heavily on the suggestion that large lunar craters, assumed to be formed from meteor impact, are too shallow and have flat or even convex bottoms. This suggests that something is stopping these impacts from going too deep, and that large meteors are in fact drilling through a rocky layer and end up hitting an armoured hull underneath the lunar’s crust.

Conclusion

Whilst we still have a lot to learn about our moon, Hollow moon and Spaceship moon are just theories [some would say wild theories]. Our orbiting companion is an obvious staging post for exploring the universe, and also for observing Earth—by humans or aliens, should they be around. However, although the moon is less dense than Earth, it is unlikely to contain a vast quantity of empty space.

Current mainstream scientific opinion on the internal structure of the Moon overwhelmingly supports a solid internal structure with a thin crust, an extensive mantle and a small denser core.
